6v to 12v conversion

Don What is involved in converting my super c from 6v to 12v? Some people say that just changing the battery will suffice while others say that all the electical components must be changed to 12v apparratus? Who is correct?
jim You need a 12 volt charging system eiether a generator and regulator, or a 12 volt alternator. Then a resistor on existing ign coil if you have battery ign, not if you have a magneto. Of course 12 volt light bulbs but starter is ok to use. Can't just slap a 12 volt battery in unless you have no generator and or lights at all.
Don Thanks for your help...any suggestions on what components would work the best?

Re: 6v to 12v conversion

Don: As Jim said you have to change the charging system as well as the battery. The Delco 10SI alternator is your most economical change over. Last one I did was a used alternator from an auto wrecker, around $35. Before that I struck a sale and go a new one for $45.

I recommend going to a true 12 volt coil. I've found resistors to be a pain in the butt. I have a box of them to prove it.

You can buy kits, but that is an expensive way to go. Mounting for the alternator is quite simple on these tractors. Just weld a flat 1/4" plate on top of old generator mount, the loops on flat plate for attaching the alternator. A pulley with about 2" offset is best as it sets alternator back enough to clear engine front casting, thus allowing you to tuck it in closer to block. Just makes for a neater looking job. I use the double pulley off 1980s V8 GM car, then use V away from alternator body.

I'll attach a photo of that mount on my Super A. If you want wiring directions, send me an e mail. There are a couple of option on this. To send me an e mail click on my name in this thread, it will direct you.

Karl It would be easiest to get an ignition coil with an internal resistor. No extra connections to go bad and a much cleaner look. Ignition points can only stand about 9 volts so no problem on 6v system. 12v will burn them up fast. Unless you want totally authentic look the coil is available at any parts house in town.
Jason MacDonald Hi there.

My father has a '56 (?) farmall, and is looking to do the same... convert from 6v 12v.

Would you be able to email me wiring diagrams, or anything you have in order to do this? He has all the parts needed.

Thanks in advance,

Jason.

George I have a farmall 1955 farmall 100. My tractor has a low capacity ground. Can I change it to positive to positive? And my battery is 6 volts and could I convert it to 12 volts. If anyone can answer my questions, please do so. Please don't hesitate! This is my email: Thank you!
